Excellence Hubs
Where the Alliance meets its purpose.
Within UNINOVIS, applied data science is distributed across eight partner institutions, each stewarding a thematic Excellence Hub that anchors the Alliance’s collective expertise in a distinct area of applied data science.
Excellence Hubs are where the rubber meets the road for the Alliance. They are our ecosystems where students, researchers, and businesses come together to learn, explore, and exchange ideas — spaces that turn the Alliance’s shared ambitions into tangible activity on the ground.
Each Hub plays a coordinating role for education, lifelong learning, and mobility activities tied to its theme, while also driving research, development, and innovation (RDI) projects — many of which follow the Living Lab approach, embedding research directly within real-world settings.
Hubs create joint education opportunities, encourage staff and student mobility, support capacity building, and foster the kind of cross-border research collaboration that defines the UNINOVIS model.
Eight thematic Hubs, one Alliance
Each partner is responsible for one Excellence Hub focus theme within the broad territory of applied data science.

The Hague University of Applied Sciences leads the Alliance’s work on ensuring AI development serves society responsibly and ethically.
What are our objectives?
We promote collaboration between education (staff and students), industry, and government, organising events such as hackathons, pitch sessions, and workshops, and supporting the development of new technologies, products, and services across a broad range of industries.
We facilitate the integration of innovation ecosystems through eight thematic centres of excellence for collaborative, interdisciplinary research. This includes initiating joint European projects and promoting physical and virtual mobility for students, teachers, researchers, and other stakeholders across Europe.
Excellence Hubs
Establishment of eight thematic centres to pool research and innovation capacities in applied data science.
Research cooperation
Initiation of joint interdisciplinary research and innovation projects at the European level.
Mobility fostering
Expansion of physical, virtual, and blended mobility formats for all university members.
Practical relevance
Development of a model for dual study programmes in close cooperation with industry partners.
The Living Lab approach
Excellence Hubs also foster research projects, which can be carried out following the Living Lab approach — testing solutions directly in real-world settings so that shared research ambitions become practical innovation.
