During the UNINOVIS General Assembly hosted by the Universidad de Málaga, partners from across Europe reflected on the first year of the UNINOVIS – Data for L.I.F.E. European University Alliance. What began as a shared vision to build a European university network centred on applied data science has, in just one year, grown into a functioning alliance connecting eight universities across Europe.
From vision to operational alliance
UNINOVIS was launched under the Erasmus+ European Universities Initiative with the goal of creating a fully integrated European inter-university campus focused on applied data science, digital transformation and societal impact. The first year of the alliance focused primarily on building the governance, organisational structures and strategic alignment necessary to enable long‑term collaboration.
Building the foundations
Key governance bodies including the General Assembly, Steering Committee, Quality Assurance Board and Project Monitoring Board were established. A Fundamental Charter and a comprehensive Quality Assurance framework were adopted to ensure transparency, monitoring and strategic alignment across the alliance.
A growing research and innovation ecosystem
The alliance established eight thematic Excellence Hubs, connecting researchers and innovation activities across partner universities. In parallel, the first UNINOVIS research internship programme was launched, enabling students and early‑career researchers to collaborate internationally.
Expanding mobility and collaboration
In its first year alone, UNINOVIS enabled around 200 student and staff mobilities. International conferences, Blended Intensive Programmes, innovation camps and staff weeks were organised across the network, strengthening academic collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Preparing the European learning ecosystem
Partners began developing a shared educational architecture centred on applied data science. Preparatory work has focused on micro‑credentials, joint and double degree pathways, and a future UNINOVIS Diploma in Applied Data Science.
Sustainability and digital transformation
The alliance has launched initiatives supporting the green and digital transition. A shared ESG framework was initiated, and work began on the Common Distributed Platform that will connect the digital learning environments of all partner institutions.
