Visual Intelligence: The European Business Intelligence Hackathon — 06-10 April 2026, Sorbonne Paris Nord University

From Monday 6 April to Friday 10 April 2026, Sorbonne Paris Nord University (USPN) will host a Hackathon (BIP) focused on Data Visualization, organised within the framework of the UNINOVIS alliance.

This hackathon was born in May 2025, during the International Week hosted at Sorbonne Paris Nord University. Academic and administrative staff from across Europe took the opportunity to engage in collective reflection while on site. Together, they designed and developed this new hackathon focused on Dataviz — born out of these collaborative discussions.

The hackathon introduces students to Decision Information Systems (BIS) and Business Intelligence (BI) tools for data-driven decision-making, combining an online preparatory phase with an intensive face-to-face week in Paris.

A Hybrid Programme

In February, students received online video lectures and practical tutorials covering the key foundations of Business Intelligence:

  • Data warehouses, ETL and multidimensional modelling
  • Power BI and Power Query fundamentals
  • Dashboard design, data visualisation and DAX basics

Then, from 6 to 10 April 2026, the face-to-face phase takes place at Sorbonne Paris Nord University, where students work in small international groups on a real-life BI challenge. They design a simplified data warehouse and develop interactive dashboards to meet an institution's actual needs.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the week, students will have gained hands-on experience with the full Business Intelligence pipeline:

  • The usefulness of data visualisation and of Power BI
  • How to sort out, organise and transform raw data with Power Query and its M language
  • How to model data according to the multidimensional schema
  • How to conceptualise, create and deploy dashboards with multiple axes of analysis using Power BI
  • How to create complex queries and calculations in DAX language
  • How to integrate customised data visualisations from the community

A project born from collaboration, driven by innovation, and dedicated to empowering the next generation of data professionals.
